Forget old low-carb diet plans that focused on processed protein bars and shakes. This year, the keto diet got high marks for low carb. Keto, short for “ketogenic,” is all about training the body to burn fat for fuel. How? By eating fat—and lots of it. Most keto diets recommend getting at least 70 percent of your daily calories from fat and the rest from protein. The goal is to eat as few carbohydrates as possible. Another risk regarding the use of dietary supplements intended to promote weight loss is that these products are usually self-prescribed without clearance or input from a health care professional. This can result in harmful interactions between different products and/or medications. Currently in the U.S., there is no controlled system for reporting bad reactions and side effects associated with popular weight loss pills. While some people taking these products, or their doctors, may sometimes report problems to the FDA, they’re not required by law to do so.
But all this was rather abstract. I wanted to see how real people living in the 21st century would do on the simple diet plan. I decided to recruit some volunteers at my gym to test the diet. All of the people I chose were healthy exercisers, in their early 20s to their 60s. While some had elevated cholesterol or were on medications, most just wanted to lose weight. About 40 stuck with the diet for six weeks, and some of those stayed on for another six-week study with 15 volunteers from another local gym.

It’s way too boring to constantly slog it out on slow motion plans, and multi-year lifestyle goals are not in the least bit motivating to me. I’ve lost 60 lbs over 3 years, but if I had to think about it that way from the start, I’d have just quit. Those promoting lifestyle changes need to be aware of how devastating their concepts are to some people – everyone is different.
Truth be told, the title is a bit misleading, “Best Diets..” Who can really tell you which ones are the best? A review website that recommends one specific product, while every review website recommends something different. How do you know if they are telling the truth? Maybe you saw an ad on the website, or on Facebook? Perhaps you saw a post on Instagram touting amazing weight loss benefits of tea, juice, protein drinks, or diet pills? Finally, you could have seen a cleanse, detox, or anything really….
Whether you like social media, or not, it is a strong signal that the business is legitimate. Scams might put on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter icons their website, but you really need to take the time, and check these pages out for yourself.
